LWVWI Statement on Governor's Veto of Voter Suppression Bills

There is no democracy without voting rights and there are no voting rights without access

Voting is the cornerstone of our democracy. Yesterday the Governor took action to veto several bills that would have limited the ability of voters with disabilities, older adults, and many other Wisconsin voters to participate in the electoral process. This was an important step to protect the rights of voters in our state.

These bills would have created new barriers, impacted the voting rights of hundreds of thousands of Wisconsinites and increased the administrative burden for clerks around the state..  Voters with disabilities and older voters already have numerous barriers to voting including lack of transportation, polling places that are inaccessible, complex medical conditions, difficulty obtaining photo ID, less access to technology and the internet and more.

The League of Women Voters of Wisconsin has been steadfast in our belief that all eligible voters must have access to their right to vote. Our goal should be to make it easier for our citizens to participate in elections – not harder. This is a win for protecting our freedom to vote, ensuring that every eligible voter can cast a ballot, and that every ballot is counted.
