Drop Boxes; Ballot Return Assistance in Use for Spring Primary

MADISON, WI–The use of drop boxes and rules around ballot return assistance will remain the same as in past elections at least through the February 15 spring primary, says a Wisconsin Appellate Court.

The League of Women Voters of Wisconsin commends the decision of the District 4 Court of Appeals to maintain a stay regarding ballot drop boxes and ballot assistance, following a Wisconsin Circuit Court decision last week to prohibit drop boxes and create confusing guidelines surrounding absentee ballot return assistance.

“Changing the rules this close to an election would have caused too much uncertainty for voters and clerks alike, and it would have disenfranchised voters who need assistance returning their ballots,” said Debra Cronmiller, executive director of the League of Women Voters of Wisconsin.

Drop boxes are a safe way for voters to return their absentee ballots, especially during a pandemic. To find a ballot drop box near you, visit bit.ly/LWVWIVoteEarly. To know your rights as a voter regarding assistance, visit disability vote.org

Law Forward will continue to work on behalf of the League, Disability Rights Wisconsin and Wisconsin Faith Voices for Justice, in order to protect voters and make sure every election is accessible.
