WISCONSIN - Organizations from across the state signed onto a letter calling on the Wisconsin State Legislature to protect the voting rights of Wisconsin voters and reject harmful legislation that will create barriers and disenfranchise eligible voters.
Casting a ballot is a fundamental right for all eligible Wisconsin voters no matter which part of the state they live in, what language they speak or if they choose to vote in person or by mail. We are urging legislators to reject any proposal to require voters to provide documentary proof of citizenship in order to register to vote or enshrine photo ID requirements in the state constitution.
Wisconsin’s elections are safe and secure. However, restrictive voting laws risk disenfranchising eligible voters of all ages, backgrounds and beliefs. Such legislation often fuels disinformation among voters and diverts attention from the real challenges Wisconsinites face, including economic hardships, childcare shortages and lack of access to clean drinking water.
“The League and partners are concerned about legislative efforts that could create or reinforce barriers to the ballot box. Going into the new year, we are prepared to stand for voting rights and work with legislators on both sides of the aisle to empower election workers and voters,” said Debra Cronmiller, executive director of the League of Women Voters of Wisconsin.
