LWV Milwaukee County's Comité por el Voto Latino Reaches Latino Youth and Parents

February 3, 2024

LWV Milwaukee County’s Comité por el Voto Latino - Latino Voter Outreach (CVL-LVO) tabled in January at La Causa’s Parent-Teacher Night, and left with a powerful memory of two special students.

As part of its marketing outreach, CVL-LVO designed two sarape stoles, one with “Future Voter” and the other with “Registered Voter”. The sarape is a colorful, woven cloth with roots in Mexico and Latin America, and Latinos, particularly of Mexican heritage, use them as a symbol of cultural pride. To bring vibrancy and interest to their table, the CVL-LVO displayed their Future Voter sarape, and was surprised when two students, who are best friends, wrapped the sarape around their shoulders and asked for a photo.

Eloisa Gomez of CVL-LVO described it as “a touching and powerful moment… [when] the girls celebrated their friendship with an achievement symbol and a reminder of the importance of becoming registered voters.”
