  • Don’t miss the Action Committee meeting this Saturday, October 5, 10 am in the League office – it will start your month off on the right note!
  • If you are new to the League, need a refresher on how League works, or have a friend who might be interested, the orientation on October 12th in Concord may be just your cup of tea. Join us!
  • We’re still celebrating! Join us at a theater party in Concord for a play featuring suffragists (we plan to go October 13th but you can choose another date). And think about coming along on our trip to Sacramento on November 9th for 19th Amendment ratification celebrations there! Be sure to read about this month’s featured suffragist as well.
  • Our “Third Saturday” meeting on October 19th is a special workshop on how to discuss topics respectfully in a charged political environment. Presenter Martha Cox is a professional as well as a former LWV California Board member. Pre-registration is required – do it now!
  • Get the basics, and the most recent news, on the Schools and Communities First initiative at a bonus Saturday meeting on October 26th.
  • Find out how you can help LWV Diablo Valley work on Affordable Housing and Homelessness, one of our priority issues this year.
  • September kicked off our Voters Service activities, and we have two reports – from our jam-packed September meeting and also from our two National Voter Registration Day sites.
  • The LWV US has more Diversity, Equity and Inclusion webinars coming up – the next one is October 30th, plus dates in November and December. Want to participate in these as a group? Let us know and we’ll help that happen.

And finally, to remind us how lucky we are not to live in a state that penalizes us for doing voter registration, here’s some news from LWVUS (hint: you can sign up for regular Updates from LWVUS here):

"This month, in a victory for Tennessee voters, a federal district court judge granted the League of Women Voters of Tennessee a preliminary injunction in their case League of Women Voters of Tennessee v. Hargett. The case challenged a recently passed Tennessee law that leveled civil fines and criminal penalties on organizations that register voters.

"Because of the injunction, the law’s damaging penalties will not be in place during a crucial time for voter registration, as the Tennessee registration deadline is October 7. "
