Parties Take Over Presidential Selection Process

Saturday, March 23, 2024 - 8:00am

The General Assembly stopped funding a presidential preference primary in an omnibus election bill in 2022 (HB1878) and turned it over to the political parties. Legislators are considering legislation to restore that primary for 2028 (HB 1525 and HB 2895).

DEMOCRATSThe party offered a choice of casting a ballot by mail or voting at an in-person voting site on Saturday, March 23, for anyone registered to vote by Feb. 21 as a Democrat or unaffiliated (not as a Republican). For more information, go to missouridemocrats.org.

GOP: The Republicans held a Caucus on Saturday, March 2. Any registered voter could participate after signing a pledge to the party. For more information, see the Missouri GOP website.

LIBERTARIANS: The party held a Feb. 24 convention at the Holiday Inn in Earth City. Delegates were picked to go to Washington, D.C., on Memorial Day weekend to vote for a presidential candidate. For more information, see the LPMO website.

At a League-ponsored webinar on changes in Missouri's presidential selection process, Chris Grahn-Howard shared information on the GOP's March 2 caucus and Democratic Party Executive Director Matthew Patterson shared its process for a March 23 primary election.

A recording of the webinar is available in two parts. Click here to learn about the Republican Caucus and here to learn about the Democratic election.
