LWVMN's Positions

LWV Minnesota, as part of LWV United States, automatically adopts all positions of the LWV United States. LWVMN's Program For Action provides an overview of the LWVUS positions alongside the state-specific positions LWVMN has adopted. The Program For Action is updated every two years following the LWVMN State Convention.

LWVMN Legislative Priorities

The LWVMN board of directors sets priorities based on the current needs of Minnesota, their relevancy to LWV’s mission, their political feasibility, and their urgency. While LWVMN works on many issues, these issues receive additional dedicated resources.

2026 LWVMN Legislative Priorities

 

Elections Administration

        • Support improvements to election administration that benefit voters and election officials based on lessons learned from recent elections
        • Oppose any changes that do not balance voter access and election security.

Redistricting Reform 

        • Prioritize congressional and legislative redistricting reform to establish redistricting processes at the state and local level which are driven by citizens through citizen commissions
        • Include prioritized principles that place minority representation and communities of interest above geographic and political considerations
        • Establish transparency through public input and review

Gun Violence Prevention 

        • Support laws intended to reduce deaths and injuries by firearms
        • Support funding programs and strategies that will reduce homicides, suicides or unintentional firearm deaths or injuries.

Environmental Protection

        •  Continue to support the Minnesota Environmental Partnership in working toward solutions to climate change, conserving and protecting natural resouces and and promoting government accountability with our volunteer-led Climate Change Task Force.

 

Other 2026 Statewide Priorities

LWVMN will also engage in education and support of the following issues, as time, resources and member engagement allow, ensuring that they are consistent with the positions of LWV and LWVMN. 

Money in Politics

        • Support campaign finance policies and enforcement that enhance political equality for all citizens, ensures transparency, protects representative

Minnesota Equal Rights Amendment

        • Promote the adoption of a ballot issue to add the Equal Rights Amendment into the Minnesota State Constitution that is consistent with the positions of LWV.

Ranked Choice Voting

        • Continue to support Ranked Choice Voting as an option for local governments, including creation of statewide standards in statute for the conduct of elections with RCV, and become further educated about its feasibility for statewide
