Join us for the second part of our Issues Briefing Series on Advocacy for Social Policy: Building Capacity for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in League. The briefing was centered around diversity and ways the League can strive for total inclusion and equity. Speakers discussed some of the progress made in this area, such as the DEI approach and the work of the Community Alliance Committee. They also discussed some of the short-comings, such as individual biases, which the League will be working on this coming year. The conversation was lead by the following panelists: Jeanne Roberts, president of the LWV of Appleton and the co-chair of the LWVWI Community Alliances Communittee; Earnestine Moss of LWV Dane County; Eloisa Gómez of LWV Milwaukee County and the co-chair of the LWVWI Community Alliances Committee; and Melanie Ramsey, the vice president of the LWVWI Board of Directors.The full agenda can be viewed here.

Meet the Speakers

Jeanne Roberts

 

 

Jeanne Roberts, moderator, is in her fourth year as president of the LWV of Appleton. She also co-chairs the LWVWI Community Alliances Committee with Eloisa Gómez. Jeanne is a retired mental health counselor who specialized in the treatment of trauma.

Earnestine Moss

 

 

Earnestine Moss is vice president of the NAACP Dane County Branch and Co-chair of the Dane County Voter ID Coalition. She is a past president of the League of Women Voters of Dane County and the first African American elected to the position in 2010. Earnestine is also a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and a longtime human and civil rights activist in the Madison community. She served as a civil rights compliance officer in the Wisconsin Department of Children and Families for several years.

Eloisa Gómez

 

 

Eloisa Gómez is the chair of the League of Women Voters of Milwaukee County’s Comité por el Voto Latino/Latinx Voter Outreach Committee (CVL-LVO). This committee has been working for the past three years on registering Latino voters and promoting voter education on Milwaukee’s south side in partnership with a variety of community partners. She is co-chair of the League of Women Voters of Wisconsin’s Community Alliance Committee (CAC) and has held this role since 2019. Eloisa is also the co-author of Somos Latinas: Voices of Wisconsin Latina Activists. This book shares the stories of 25 women with Wisconsin ties. From outspoken demonstrators to collaborative community-builders to determined individuals working for change behind the scenes, “Somos Latinas” details the inspirational lives and their array of community-building actions. Eloisa was the director of the Milwaukee County University of Wisconsin-Extension office for 11 years before she retired in 2018.

Melanie G. Ramey

 

 

Melanie G. Ramey, JD, MSW, is a 50+ member of the League of Women Voters. She served as president of LWVWI for 10 years and is the current vice president. Melanie is president of the Madison Committee on Foreign Relations and is a commissioner on the Madison Opportunities Commission.
