I know we are also busy on various levels with other League responsibilities in fulfilling the mission of “Empowering voters and defending democracy.”
Let’s quickly discuss why this is important in the month of February.
Founded as Negro History Week in 1926 by Dr. Carter G. Woodson, today, we know this month is noted as Black History Month where many honor and celebrate the role that Black Americans have played and continue to play in our nation’s history. The first day of February is also observed as the beginning Chinese New Year – with celebrations culminating with the Lantern Festival on February 15th. 2022 is noted as the “Year of the Tiger” – symbolizing resilience and strength as the tiger embodies courage and bravery.
But speaking of courage and bravery, on February 14th, the League turns 102 years old! 2022 is not just a crucial election year, but as you all know, we are in a critical moment for voting rights, our elections, and the future of our democracy. In our League Update from President Deborah Ann Turner, all Leagues are invited to celebrate our birthday together by “throwing down for voting rights through action.” Let’s continue to be courageous and brave as we educate, empower and defend our democracy!
With that, let’s celebrate in “February and Forever”
- 1: Black History Month (1976 Ford Administration)
- 1: Heart Health Month (1963 Joint Resolution)
- 4: National (Wear) Red Day
- 11: International Day of Women and Girls in Science
- 14: LWV 102nd Virtual Birthday Rally: to celebrate our expansive history and our pro-voter future in this rally, featuring speakers from partner organizations like Black Voters Matter and the Worker's Circle!
How do we approach these and other League milestones with a DEI Lens?
We must be intentional in how a program, a process, a product, is perceived by a variety of communities, voices, and perspectives, and what, if any, barriers may exist that is preventing it from being equitable or inclusive of everyone.
What are ways to acknowledge and celebrate accomplishments of the American Black and Women in February and Forever – in the Year of the Tiger?
- Advocate for voting rights
- Organize a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Event
- Become an ally, mentor, sponsor, or advocate
- Creatie a “Friendbank” of volunteers to do voter registration, call/remind new voters to check their registration or educate the public about upcoming election information.
- Learn about Black History in your area, create awareness, and advocate for the correction of any wrong-doings.
