Lawsuit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) on behalf of the League of Women Voters of South Carolina against president of the South Carolina Senate Thomas Alexander (R), Speaker of the South Carolina House of Representatives Murrell Smith (R) and South Carolina Election Commission Executive Director Howard Knapp challenging the state’s congressional districts.

In January 2022, the South Carolina Legislature approved a new congressional redistricting plan that reapportioned the state’s seven congressional districts.

The league argues that Republican lawmakers deliberately manipulated the state’s congressional districts to favor their political party in a partisan gerrymander.

The league claims that this partisan gerrymander violates the state constitution and asks the court to ban the use of the current congressional map for future elections.

The league also asks the court to order the adoption of a new congressional redistricting plan that complies with state law.
