The League of Women Voters of South Carolina (LWVSC) has been widely recognized as a trusted brand in the state for 86 years and a leader in advocating for voter access and good government issues.
In 2020, the League engaged in the process of creating new district maps for Congress and the SC House and SC Senate. Activities included analysis of partisan bias in proposed maps, submission of maps for consideration, testimony to the legislature, and a public awareness campaign. Before the start of the 2022 election season, the LWVSC worked closely with legislators to bring about no-excuse, in- person early voting for a two-week period before an election.
The LWVSC ramped up its efforts to educate voters in preparation for the 2022 midterm elections by making its online resource VOTE411 the “go to” place for election information. The League covered 124 races and 367 candidates running for office in South Carolina. Candidates responses to League questions were viewed by more than 115,000 visitors to VOTE411. An LWVSC digital campaign provided voting and election information to more than 500,000 South Carolinians.
In addition, the LWVSC has been active in countering attacks on public education through censorship, curriculum controls, and dilution of funding and to advocate for the expansion of Medicaid to protect our state’s vulnerable citizens.
The League of Women Voters of South Carolina is proud to be nonpartisan, neither supporting or opposing candidates or political parties at any level of government, but working on vital issues of concern to members and the public. South Carolinians can count on the League to protect the pillars of democracy—including voter rights, an independent judiciary, and public education —through our education and advocacy programs, “ said Nancy Williams, president.“Despite the many challenges facing our state and its democratic institutions, the League and its members continue to be beacons of light in South Carolina. As we approach a new biennium, the LWVSC is well-positioned to advance its mission of Empowering Voters and Defending Democracy.
