We agree with Governor Walker that employment in jobs that pay a living wage is the most effective means for families to move out of poverty and become vital, contributing members of society. However the majority of people in Wisconsin who continue to receive FoodShare and other government benefits are people who already face substantial barriers to improved employment. Increasing the bureaucratic compliance requirements is not the most humane, and certainly not the most efficient, way to help people train and compete for good jobs.

The League of Women Voters is pleased with Gov. Walker’s efforts to address the long-standing problems at Lincoln Hills and Copper Lake Schools. But, we join Rep. Joel Kleefisch (R) and Rep. David Bowen (D) in urging faster action than is contemplated in the governor’s plans.

The Wisconsin Elections Commission considers several critical matters in its December 12, 2017 meeting, including ballot design, agency staffing and a UW-Madison study on the impact of the photo ID requirement. A statement from LWV WI discusses these matters.

Assembly Bill 637 seeks to address some problems with the current absentee ballot process. While we appreciate the intent of this legislation, our statement outlines serious problems including the fact that it creates a two-tier system in which all absentee ballots are not treated equally.
