Probable last chance for Redistricting testimony on Bad (and Good) Congressional Maps

The Meeting and Testimony

There is an urgent need for testimony in what will probably be the last opportunity for public testimony on proposed Congressional plans. The Senate Judiciary Committee’s Redistricting Subcommittee will meet on Thursday, January 13, 2022, at 12:00 p.m. in the Third Floor Conference Room of the Statehouse. The purpose of this meeting is to review and receive testimony on two proposed Congressional plans. These plans will be found under the PLAN PROPOSALS tab on the Senate redistricting website (https://redistricting.scsenate.gov).

No public access will be allowed in the third floor conference room. The public may watch the meeting on the Statehouse website at https://www.scstatehouse.gov/. Public testimony will be received via Zoom or in writing.

To sign up to testify by zoom, contact the staff at redistricting [at] scsenate.gov. Written testimony should be submitted to the same email address.

The Plans Under Consideration

As noted above, the plans under consideration are at https://redistricting.scsenate.gov/planproposal.html. For a more interactive perspective, they have been uploaded at:

Amendment 1 https://davesredistricting.org/maps#viewmap::b76ac02e-37d6-40ec-821b-7176f733c0b2

Amendment 2 https://davesredistricting.org/maps#viewmap::4cf031d0-db7b-4f08-94c0-49c67c03bf69

House Congressional Plan 2 Senate Amendment 1 is a revision of the original Senate offering. It fragments the area around Charleston along racial lines to yield no South Carolina districts that would be competitive in November.

House Congressional Plan 2 Senate Amendment 2 is a major revision that provides two competitive Congressional districts and respects major communities of interest.

Thank you all for your continued advocacy on this important issue.
