September 29 "What Would Fair Maps Look Like" event video coming soon

We will post the video recording of our September 29 Zoom presentation on the League's redistricting web page in a few days. We regret the delay;  the event was crashed by two vandals, one playing music and the other drawing on the screen. While they were evicted promptly, we prefer not to post the video until we remove their contributions.

We will let you know when it is posted, and I hope those of you who couldn’t participate in the original event will watch because we offer in-depth information about why our maps have been drawn as they have.

Detailed League Maps Now Available Online

In the meantime, our proposed maps are available on our website and, in much greater detail, at the "Dave’s Redistricting App" website. At Dave’s, it is possible to pull up our map, access detailed demographic data at both precinct and district levels, see assessments of partisan leans, and more. For quick access to our detailed maps on the Dave's App, go to:

Create Your Own Map

You can also create your own maps at Dave’s by establishing a free account and drawing to express your own preferences. Data can be exported in a format useable with Maptitude, the software used by the SC General Assembly. So, if you want to submit your own maps to the General Assembly, get busy!

Senate Redistricting Update

October 8 is the deadline for submitting proposed maps to the Senate Redistricting Subcommittee. A convenient portal has been established for these submissions at https://redistricting.scsenate.gov/plansubmission.html. The League of Women Voters has submitted our Congressional and Senate maps there and received prompt acknowledgment from Senate staff.

House Redistricting Update

The one remaining public hearing by the House of Representatives is scheduled for Monday, October 4, at 4:30 p.m. in Blatt 110. In-person, virtual, and written testimony will be accepted at this meeting.

To sign up for virtual testimony on this date, email virtualtestimony [at] schouse.gov and specify October 4 as the date that you wish to testify. Written testimony should be sent to redistricting [at] schouse.gov

At the September 28 hearing, House Redistricting Chair Jordan announced that House members will be scheduled by appointment for a time in the map room with technical staff during the period October 4 – November 5.

The House has not announced any plans to receive third-party map submissions, despite repeated requests for information on their plans. The League intends to submit our plans for Congressional and House maps to them in the next week, with a request that the committee informs us if the submission doesn’t conform to their requirements in any way.

Voters should decide elections, not legislators. #WeAreWatching.

League of Women Voters of South Carolina  criteria:

Drawing new district lines at all levels following the decennial census to reflect strict anti-gerrymandering standards. We believe that criteria for the map-drawing process:

  • should exclude partisan and incumbent protection
  • should not be drawn with the intention of reducing competitiveness
  • should avoid splitting counties and precincts when possible
