Columbia, SC - The League of Women Voters has been closely following the redistricting process in South Carolina and preparing our own maps for consideration by the SC Legislature. This week we are submitting maps to the SC House and SC Senate, and will be releasing them publicly on September 29th in a virtual event  open to the public: “What Would Fair Maps Look Like?”

The public is invited to our map release at 7 pm on Wednesday, September 29, when we will discuss our process, reveal our maps, and give a legislative update on redistricting. Our maps will then be made available on our website.

The LWVSC maps have been drawn by SC redistricting expert Dr. John Ruoff, in consultation with an independent Redistricting Advisory Committee formed of community leaders, former legislators, and academic experts. These House, Senate, and Congressional maps were drawn without prioritizing incumbent or partisan protection, while focusing on communities of interest, including municipalities and counties.

Given the large changes that have occurred in South Carolina’s demographics over the past ten years, districts will undergo considerable shifts no matter who is drawing the lines. But will legislators draw lines that prioritize communities of interest in SC or their chances of winning the next election? Come see what fair maps could look like in South Carolina on September 29.

Note: After registering, attendees will receive a zoom link in their confirmation email.
