SC House proposal makes Nancy Mace’s congressional district less GOP dominant

...The S.C. chapter of the League of Women Voters was also critical of the new lines. Spokeswoman Lynn Teague questioned the wisdom of including a number of predominantly Black precincts from the Charleston area in the same district as predominantly Black precincts in Columbia, more than 100 miles away.

“I feel like a broken record on this, but we can keep communities of interest together in a congressional map,” she said. “And the House has chosen not to do that.”

Redistricting subcommittee chairman Jay Jordan, R-Florence, did not return a request for comment.

Teague reiterated that the lines affecting Charleston and the Lowcountry remain problematic.

“It’s a naturally competitive area,” she said. “If it’s drawn as a true community of interest, it is competitive, possibly more competitive even than the staff map shows.”
