S.1060, the Educator Safety and Classroom Authority Act, affirms the authority of teachers to implement classroom management. It asks for teachers and administrators to administer appropriate discipline measures to ensure a conducive learning environment in the classroom and school. Call your state senator and ask that the bill be immediately heard in subcommittee due to its late introduction in the two-year legislative session.

The League does not believe that the H.4756 "bathroom bill" addresses a legitimate problem. Schools have found reasonable accommodations over the years. However, the Senate's version recommends a porta potty as an acceptable accommodation. Contact your House Representative to vote NO to this demeaning amendment.

Congress continues to introduce bills that would require voters to present documentary proof of citizenship (DPOC) to register and/or vote. Americans do not need MORE obstacles to vote. The SAVE Act and its iterations would create one more barrier to the voting process, as many eligible voters do not have easy access to the necessary documents. Tell Congress to oppose the SAVE Act suite of bills.

While attempting to provide for parents' rights and a broad range of beliefs, H.4757 creates considerable additional work for teachers and districts and fails to acknowledge school efforts already in place to resolve possible concerns. Existing laws, regulations, policies and procedures already address the provisions of this bill. Contact your State Senator to vote NO.

H. 4760 restricting access to abortion-inducing medications has passed the House and moved to the Senate Medical Affairs Committee. Email its members to vote NO on this harmful bill.

"Bathroom bill" H.4756 is unnecessary and puts cisgender students at risk of bullying and harassment. Parental rights are important, but the requirements of H.4757would be a significant burden on teachers and schools.

The House Constitutional Laws Subcommittee will hold hearings on bills
closing partisan primaries by party (January 15) and restricting abortion rights (January 14). Please add your voice as citizens and voters by attending the hearings if possible and by submitting written or oral testimony! The League is always especially concerned about bills that impact representative democracy, as the bills to close primary elections would, but we are also concerned about infringements on the rights of citizens in other areas.

A developer is requesting a “special exception” from the Colleton County Board of Zoning Appeals to allow a data center on 850 acres of rural timberland. Data centers use massive amounts of water, require significant amounts of clean water, and do not require many employees. Noise, pollutants, impacts on wildlife and wetlands, and residential quality of life are also significant concerns. PDF icon New: Southern Environmental Law Center legal and environmental analysis

it is urgent that you call your State Senator and legislators on the Senate Medical Affairs Subcommittee about S.323, the dangerous and extreme abortion ban currently being fast-tracked through the SC Senate. Before their November 18 second hearing, voice your objections. Legislators should be fighting FOR our freedoms, not against them. #StopTheBansSC
